Wegmans Features 'Homegrown Fresh' Partners Online
ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Shoppers at Wegmans, based here, can now find out more about the retailer's vast array of locally grown seasonal produce or the 900-odd partnerships that the company has established with local growers by visiting the chain's Web site.
At wegmans.com, they'll discover "a treasure trove of family farm facts and history of some of Wegmans partners," according to a statement from the grocer.
Visitors to the site can get information on such topics as the growers' specialties and how long they've been partners with Wegmans. Partners include Webster, N.Y.-based Bauman Farms, producing strawberries, broccoli, and cauliflower; Aberdeen, N.J.-based Samaha's Farms, growing tomatoes, peppers, and winter squash; Mount Union, Pa.-based Singing Creek Farm, producing live potted culinary herbs; and Leesburg, Va.-based berry grower Epkan Farm.
The site is designed to be an extension of Wegmans' in-store approach to produce. "We make a big deal of where the produce comes from, with signs showing the name of the farm, and sometimes pictures of the people who grow the crops," noted Steve Thiergart, Wegmans homegrown zone coordinator for the Syracuse, N.Y. area. "Customers really like that."
Wegmans operates 71 stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, and Maryland.
