Walmart Stores Offer $9 Diabetes Management Products

In the same vein as its generic prescription program, Wal-Mart is offering $9 ReliOn diabetes management products nationwide, as part of an "affordable pharmacy program." The products are available exclusively at Walmart units, and include ReliOn blood glucose meters, test strips and the A1c test.

According to the Bentonville, Ark.-based retailer, a customer with diabetes testing once per day can save more than $200 annually by using its supplies versus the average cost of other brands. To date, Wal-Mart said it pharmacy program has saved customers more than $1 billion.

In other news from Bentonville, Sam's Club is offering a new option for members and shoppers who have been bringing their own bags or reusing boxes to take purchases home. A new reusable shopping tote will be available in all 594 locations nationwide by Oct. 1.

Sam's Club estimated this change to reusable shopping totes will help remove 1.9 million pounds of cardboard and packaging material from the waste stream per year.

The price of the new polypropylene tote is $2.74 for two. Each bag can hold more than 50 pounds, the retailer said. The club estimated the bags will last about five years, and said members can return them to Sam's Clubs to be recycled when they need replacing.
