Wal-Mart Waiting to Build Neighborhood Markets in Colorado
DENVER - In a sign that supercenters are still Wal-Mart's preferred format, the Bentonville, Ark.-based retailer has said it will wait to build its smaller-format Neighborhood Markets in Colorado until its supercenter development plans there are further along, according to published reports.
The retailer is holding off on plans to build a 42,000-square-foot Neighborhood Market in Denver's Highlands Garden Village neighborhood. A company spokesman told the Denver Post Wal-Mart would wait until its supercenter program is more mature.
Wal-Mart's decision came as a surprise to the neighborhood's developer and to residents who expected to meet with the retailer yesterday to discuss design plans, according to the Denver Post.
Wal-Mart will continue building Neighborhood Markets in other states and will likely bring the concept to Colorado at a later date, company spokesman Keith Morris said.
Wal-Mart operates 72 Neighborhood Markets nationally and plans to open 25 more within the next year. The stores are less than half the size of traditional Wal-Mart stores, and stock groceries and health and beauty items.
In Colorado, Wal-Mart operates 17 traditional stores and 34 supercenters.
