Wal-Mart Reports March Sales Increase
BENTONVILLE, Ark. - Wal-Mart Stores Inc. today reported net sales for the five-week March period ending April 2, 2004, of $25.131 billion, an increase of 14.0 percent over the $22.049 billion in the same five-week period in the prior year. Sales for the nine-week period were $45.3 billion, an increase of 14.0 percent over $39.7 billion in the similar period in the prior year.
The Wal-Mart division's sales for the five-week period were $16.7 billion, up 12.3 percent over sales of $14.9 billion in the same five-week period in the prior year. The division's sales for the nine weeks of $30.35 billion were up 12.4 percent over $27 billion in the similar prior-year period.
Sam's Club sales for the period were $3.384 billion, up 9.3 percent over sales of $3.097 billion in the same five-week period in the prior year. Club sales for the nine weeks of $6.062 billion were up 9.8 percent over the $5.523 billion in the similar prior-year period.
The International division's sales for the five-week period were $5.025 billion, up 23.6 percent over sales of $4.064 billion in the same five-week period in the prior year. The division's sales for the nine weeks of $8.881 billion were up 23 percent over the $7.219 billion in the similar prior-year period.
Wal-Mart is estimating that its April sales will be up 4 to 6 percent. However, with one less Easter week and tougher comparisons in the period, it is expecting sales to be closer to the low end of that range.
