Wal-Mart Plans Three Supercenters in Twin Cities
MINNEAPOLIS - Wal-Mart Stores has said that it intends to open its first three supercenters in the Minneapolis/St. Paul suburbs by early 2006, according to published accounts.
The company has approached officials in Elk River, Maple Grove, and Shakopee to permit it to convert its existing discount stores in those locations to the supercenter format.
Wal-Mart already has supercenters in the nearby Minnesota towns of Buffalo, Cambridge, and Red Wing. Additionally, the retailer is constructing a supercenter in Monticello, which is slated to open by late next year.
There are currently 13 Wal-Mart supercenters in the state, and the company is scheduled to complete the conversion of its Baxter store to a supercenter next month.
Wal-Mart's community affairs officials were unavailable for comment.
