Wal-Mart Kicks Off 10th Teacher Recognition Program
BENTONVILLE, Ark -- Wal-Mart and Sam's Club are giving shoppers an opportunity to recognize outstanding local teachers through the company's 10th annual Teacher of the Year program.
Anyone can recommend an outstanding teacher by visiting a local Wal-Mart store, Supercenter, Neighborhood Market or Sam's and filling out a nomination form. Nominations will be accepted through Feb. 27.
Each winning teacher will receive a $1,000 educational grant from the Wal-Mart/Sam's Club Foundation to benefit his or her local school, a $50 shopping card to buy supplies for the classroom, and an honorary Wal-Mart greeter's vest. Winning teachers also have the opportunity to apply for state and national Teacher of the Year honors.
The program is one of the largest such efforts in the country, and will find Wal-Mart will giving back $4.1 million this year to the schools of winning teachers, according to Betsy Reithemeyer, Wal-Mart's v.p. of corporate affairs.
"Education is a cornerstone commitment for Wal-Mart and Sam's Club associates nationwide," she said. "We are proud to help raise awareness for excellence in education and want to recognize those teachers who play such an important role in growing and shaping young people today. We encourage parents to help students nominate a teacher who's made a difference in their lives."
