Wal-Mart Eyes Suburban Chicago As Next Target for Upscale Supercenter
BENTONVILLE, Ark. -- Wal-Mart Stores here is looking to bring its new upscale Supercenter to the Chicago area, according to published reports.
"We're looking at several sites where we could do that type of store," Todd Libbra, Wal-Mart's regional general manager and v.p. of operations for Illinois, was quoted as saying in the Chicago Tribune. "If we find the right location, we're ready to go forward with it."
In March, the world's largest retailer bowed its first test store in March in the Dallas suburb of Plano which features wood floors, premium wines, a sushi bar, a Wi-Fi cafe, gourmet cheeses, and wider aisles, among other upscale touches. Last month, Wal-Mart opened a second test unit in White Plains, N.Y. that was designed for urban markets and incorporates many of the upscale merchandise and design elements of the Plano unit.
