Wal-Mart Backs Off Polaroid Claim
LITTLE ROCK - Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said Thursday it was mistaken when it said it would have exclusive rights to sell Polaroid 35 mm film at its stores, The Associated Press reported.
Spokesman Rob Phillips told the AP he misspoke Tuesday when he said Wal-Mart would be the only place in the United States to buy the Polaroid-brand film, which is distributed by Agfa-Gevaert NV of Belgium.
"They can sell to anyone, but Wal-Mart is by far the largest seller of Polaroid 35 mm film in the United States," Phillips said.
Polaroid Corp., which recently entered bankruptcy court, had granted Agfa a license to market film under its name.
"When we said exclusive, we meant that currently, Wal-Mart is the only mass retailer in the United States to supply customers with Polaroid 35 mm film supplied by Agfa," Phillip said. "That does not exclude Agfa from signing agreements with other retailers."
Phillips also said the company would continue to sell other brands of film.
