Wakefern Opts for Chase Pay

Wakefern Food Corp. will accept Chase Pay as an option for consumers to pay for groceries at the retailer cooperatives’s ShopRite and The Fresh Grocer stores. Chase Pay is a digital payment solution allowing consumers with Chase Visa credit and debit cards to buy items conveniently and securely while earning awards and offers.

“In a hyper-competitive industry, Wakefern has done an amazing job growing revenue and market share in the digital space and with brick-and-mortar stores,” said Jennifer Roberts, president of strategic alliances and loyalty solutions for Chase, the U.S. consumer and commercial banking business of financial services firm JPMorgan Chase & Co., noting that the solution would “deliver a seamless payment experience … for our mutual customers.”

Wakefern will accept Chase Pay as a form of payment through ShopRite and The Fresh Grocer supermarket websites later this year, and the solution will be phased in next year at ShopRite and The Fresh Grocer store registers and via the ShopRite Mobile app.

The largest U.S. retailer-owned cooperative, Keasbey, N.J.-based Wakefern comprises 50 member companies that individually own and operate 330 supermarkets under the ShopRite, The Fresh Grocer, Price Rite and Dearborn Market banners in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

The co-op joins a host of merchants, including Best Buy and Shell, in agreeing to accept Chase Pay, which is live on select merchant websites. Chase Pay will launch for mobile payment at participating merchant registers and a form of payment in select merchant apps later this year.
