Volunteers Set to Harmonize With Albertsons' One-day CORUS Event

BOISE, Idaho - CORUS Day of Caring, Albertons' first single-day unified volunteer event, kicks off Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, with thousands of associate volunteers from the grocer's stores nationwide expected to help nonprofit organizations benefiting children and families.

According to a statement from the chain, CORUS represents the heart (COR) of the volunteer efforts of Albertsons associates (US).

"We could think of no greater way to communicate how much we care about the communities we serve," said Albertsons chairman, c.e.o., and president Larry Johnston in a statement. "Helping a neighbor in need -- completely unsolicited -- is what the true spirit of volunteerism encompasses. We have the best associates in the country and the overwhelming support we've received for this project says it all."

Albertsons began the CORUS associate volunteer program last year to encourage and facilitate volunteerism within the company. Over the past 12 months, volunteers have logged almost 800,000 hours of service in their respective communities. This year CORUS' goal is to surpass 1 million volunteer hours. To help reach this target, CORUS came up with the Day of Caring concept.

Albertsons operates under a set of core values that call for the company and its associates to be responsible, involved citizens by contributing to the quality of life in all of the communities served by its stores, the chompany said. In 2003 the retailer gave almost $78 million in cash and in-kind donations to the communities it serves, concentrating its support on hunger relief, education and development of youth, and health and nutrition.

The projects scheduled to be undertaken by associate volunteers during Albertsons' CORUS Day of Caring include doing yardwork, carpentry and repair work at non-profit organizations’ facilities, throwing Halloween parties and helping to build homes.
