U.S. Labor Secretary Gives $1 Million Grant to Dislocated Workers in Connecticut

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao yesterday provided a grant of $1 million, with an initial release of $550,167, to assist approximately 250 workers affected by the closure of the Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. distribution center in North Haven, Conn.

"This $1 million grant will help the distribution center's workers get the skills training, placement services, and assistance they need to secure new jobs," said Chao. "This investment will help these workers build solid career paths and a better future for themselves and their families."

The grant, awarded to the Connecticut Department of Employment and Training, will provide an array of services and training opportunities. Many of those who will be served are experienced workers with limited job histories outside of Stop & Shop.

Stop & Shop issued a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) on Jan. 23, and closure of the DC is expected to occur on Dec. 31.

Training will focus on areas with the greatest number of employment openings available, and other industries experiencing high growth and high demand. Services may include skills assessment, individual counseling, case management, job readiness training, and occupational training. Supportive services also may include job search and relocation assistance.

National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary's discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines.
