United Supermarkets Implements New Item-management System

LUBBOCK, Texas – United Supermarkets is implementing a new item-management system from Tomax. The system which is SKU-based rather than UPC-based, will provide advanced pricing based on gross-margin rules and competitive pricing. "Since the system is based on SKUs, it is great for our perpetual-inventory system," Scott Gilmour, United's v.p. and c.i.o., told Progressive Grocer. "It will also provide significant opportunities for process re-engineering."

The software, called Tomax Retail.net, provides a single-instance platform and instant visibility to items, customers, and associates across the enterprise, enabling United to conduct its retail operations in real time. Capable of being hosted by Tomax or the retailer, the software can be rapidly configured and deployed to support comprehensive requirements.

United is also in the process of implementing a business intelligence initiative using Hyperion Datamart, with the first phase involving the creation of a financial data mart.

Current plans also call for an upgrade to United's store POS systems, according to Gilmour.
