UNFI Acquires Nor-Cal Produce

United Natural Foods Inc. has acquired all outstanding stock of West Sacramento, Calif.-based Nor-Cal Produce Inc. for $68.6 million.

The purchase “further illustrates UNFI’s growth into fresh,” said Steven Spinner, UNFI’s president/CEO., and gives the Providence, R.I.-based wholesaler a national presence in produce when combined with its existing produce operations.

Todd Achondo, president of Nor-Cal, will remain with the company as will the entire Nor-Cal team. Nor-Cal was founded in 1972 and is a distributor of conventional and organic produce as well as other fresh products in Northern California. Annual net sales for the year ended Feb. 29, were about $151 million.

UNFI distributes more than 85,000 products to more than 40,000 customers in the United States and Canada, including supermarket chains, independent retailers and foodservice operations.
