Tops Rolls Out Next-Generation POS System

Tops Friendly Markets has deployed a new point-of-sale (POS) system in its 170 supermarkets across New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont.

The system, which was rolled out in nine months, relies on the SurePOS ACE POS application from Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions. Tolt Systems, a member of Toshiba’s Together Commerce Alliance, was the primary contractor, systems integrator and service provider from design through development, hardware sourcing, deployment and rollout, as well as the ongoing managed services.

“Our partnership with Tolt and Toshiba has allowed us to seamlessly upgrade our POS systems and ensure that we are well positioned for the long term,” said Frank Curci, Chief Executive Officer, Tops Friendly Markets. “With existing 20-plus-year-old systems, our store operators simply could not wait for new POS hardware and software to be introduced to our stores.”

Tops sought a high availability, high transaction volume system that they could rely on to deliver true innovation in retail technology. The chain also needed to be able to integrate and preserve their existing investment in Tops BonusPlus loyalty system, powered by Toshiba’s software.

“The Tops, Tolt and Toshiba teams worked with our internal and external business partners to plan and execute a major upgrade to our entire POS suite. We were able to realize the benefits almost immediately,” said Mike Metz, Vice President of IT, Tops Friendly Markets. “The joint teams were able to create a conversion and rollout plan for over 170 locations that was completed in a timely manner with zero impact to the day to day store operations and our customers.”

“The success of the Tops next-generation POS project is a direct result of the seamless partnership and focused execution between Tops, Toshiba and Tolt Solutions,” said Jack Gularson, President, Tolt Solutions. “Our project teams have been working together for over 18 years with phenomenal teamwork and respect.”

Bill Campbell, Vice President, Head of Sales, North America, Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions, said his company is one of the first POS application providers to offer high volume scanning and electronic marketing, among other checkout innovations.

Toshiba’s SurePOS ACE for 4690 Operating System POS application provides retailers many features and benefits such as enhanced payment architecture, EMV support, coupon fraud prevention, QR Code printing support and flexible design to meet changing needs. Toshiba’s 4690 Operating System, optimized for high availability retail environments, has over one million installations.
