Tops Acquires Shurfine Grocery Store
Tops Markets LLC has acquired the Shurfine Grocery Store in Angola, N.Y., bringing the total Tops store count to 173, in addition to five franchise stores.
“When the opportunity to operate in the Angola community became an option for us, we knew that a Tops Markets would be a perfect fit,” said Frank Curci, chairman and CEO of Williamsville, N.Y.-based Tops. “As we have done in similar situations, Angola residents will find that Tops believes strongly in being your neighborhood grocer and supports that by being an active participant in all the local communities we serve.”
He added that the newly acquired store also fits in well with the company’s overall growth strategy and complements its other supermarkets in the region. “This store is ideally located, has great potential, and we believe we can offer customers an exceptional shopping experience,” noted Curci. “Angola residents will be able to choose from a larger variety of national and local brand products while saving time and money.”
The company is offering the store’s full- and part-time associates employment with Tops, which it observed would “help to ensure that customers will see their same friendly team of associates and receive the same great service as in the past.”
Following extensive renovations to the 26,600-square-foot site, including an updated décor; an expanded product selection in such categories as organics and seasonal nonfoods; refrigerated produce throughout the aisles; and an enhanced cut-fruit and -vegetable program, the store is expected to reopen under the Tops banner on June 11. Shoppers will be able to redeem gas points at Tops’ nearby location in Derby, N.Y.
The Shurfine retailer cooperative operates stores in Pennsylvania, western New York, northern Maine and Maryland.
Tops employs more than 15,000 associates in New York, northern Pennsylvania, western Vermont and north central Massachusetts.
