Tesco to Offer Alternative Health Remedies from Nutri Centre

U.K. retailer Tesco on Wednesday took a controlling stake in Nutri Centre, a retailer of natural remedies currently operating one shop and a mail order service, according to an article in The Financial Times.

Tesco paid #2.93m for a 51 percent stake in the Nutri Centre. It will sell a range of Nutri Centre's 22,000 products, including vitamins, minerals, herbal remedies and homeopathic products. The products are aimed at common health complaints such as allergies, asthma, eczema and osteoporosis.

Rohit Mehta, the pharmacist who owns Nutri Centre, will continue to manage the business, but will also become Tesco's healthy living consultant.

The group plans to stock 85 Nutri Centre products in 50 stores beginning Thursday, with a plan to roll the range out to more than 200 of its 700 stores later.

Nutri Centre's full range will be available through a mail order catalogue alongside information leaflets in the stores and could eventually be sold via Tesco's successful online retailing operations
