Tesco Moves Some IT Jobs to India
LONDON - British supermarket chain Tesco PLC yesterday opened software and back-office operations in southern India and said it would hire 770 people for the center this year.
The offices in Bangalore would develop software to handle operations and manage some financial transactions online, Philip A. Clarke, Tesco's director for international operations, told reporters. He declined to divulge investment details.
Tesco had said last year it would shift information technology jobs out of Britain. The company had said those staffers would be redeployed elsewhere in Tesco.
Clarke reiterated that there would be no job losses in the company's British operations.
Tesco employs 330,000 people and runs 2,400 stores across the world. Clarke said the company planned to hire 770 people for its Bangalore operations.
The company also plans to buy more Indian-made goods, Clarke said. In 2004, Tesco bought goods worth $70 million from India, which would rise by 44 percent this year.
