Tesco Looks to Lead UK C-Store Market

LONDON - Tesco PLC has identified 1,000 potential sites in the U.K. for its Express convenience store format, Dow Jones News Service reports. The company could easily gain the leading position among supermarket companies with c-stores.

Tesco currently has 95 Express stores, all of which also sell gasoline. The company had previously announced plans to open another 50 units this year. This week's announcement that Tesco is looking at 1,000 potential retail sites had not previously been publicly disclosed. The company plans to open its first stand-alone Express store in the U.K. in October.

Tesco finance director Andrew Higginson said earlier this week the company believes its Express format can be exported around the world, according to Dow Jones. Tesco currently has 10 Express stores in Thailand.
