Tech/QA Exec Gorny Departs IFPA, Joins UFFVA

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Jim Gorny, v.p./technology and regulatory affairs for the International Fresh-cut Produce Association for the past five years, has joined the United Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Association as its new v.p./quality assurance and technology.

In his new post, Gorny will lead the association's food safety, quality assurance, supply chain technology and food security programs on behalf of its members. As United's chief food safety officer, he will advocate the membership's interests before all relevant health and safety regulatory officials, the Bush Administration, and the Congress.

Prior to his work at IFPA, Gorny was a principal in Davis Fresh Technologies for five years, in a consulting and advisory role to the produce industry in a wide range of post-harvest technology applications. He received his Ph.D. in plant biology from the University of California at Davis in 1995, and his undergraduate degrees in food science from the Louisiana State University.

"As we began this search to replace Dr. Donna Garren, Jim's name was the first recommended by industry leaders and regulatory authorities alike," said United president Tom Stenzel. "That tells you something important about his ability to be a strong advocate for the produce industry, but to work effectively with the regulatory authorities who oversee our business."
