Supervalu Taps Shaw’s Mike Stigers to Lead Northern Region

Mike Stigers, formerly president of Supervalu’s New England-based Shaw’s division, has been tapped as the new president of Supervalu’s northern region, for which he will oversee sales and operations at six distribution centers that serve more than 750 grocery retailers in the central, northern and western states in the country, including Alaska and Guam.

Stigers, who will report to Janel Haugarth, EVP and president of independent business and supply chain services, replaces Jim Gilliam, who will leave the company to pursue a new business opportunity in the coming weeks after assisting with the transition.

“Jim has been a key business leader, mentor, customer advocate and contributor to Supervalu for many years,” Haugarth said. “He will be greatly missed by employees, customers and suppliers alike. We wish him and his family health and happiness.”

Prior to his most recent post as president of Supervalu’s Shaw’s banner, Stigers held a variety of management positions throughout his 39-year industry career, including at Safeway, Jon’s Markets, an independent retailer based in Los Angeles, and San Jose, Calif.-based PW Supermarkets. Stigers has also worked on the vendor side of the grocery industry for Bass, Inc., a retail automation software company, and for Sterilox, as regional VP.

“Mike brings tremendous experience to his position as president of the northern region,” Haugarth said. “As the company begins a new chapter, I am very confident that Mike will not only help our current independent customers in the region expand and grow, but that he will bring in new customers as well.”

In addition to Stigers, Bob Jaskolski, formerly northern western and independent business EVP, has been named VP, sales, merchandising and marketing for Supervalu’s Independent Business. Jaskolski has spent the past 27 years with Supervalu and has a deep background in both retail operations and merchandising. Haugarth plans to add a VP of corporate logistics to her team in the near future, while the balance of her direct leadership team will remain the same, including:

• Kevin Kemp, president, Eastern Region
• Bill Chew, president, Midwest Region
• Bernie Grutsch, VP, procurement

“The addition of Mike and Bob along with an already strong and experienced team in place with Kevin, Bill and Bernie provides us with a great foundation for growth,” said Haugarth. “I am energized and excited at the opportunity we have to help our retailers achieve business growth and financial success.”
