Supervalu Taps New S.V.P., Human Resources, Receives Award From P&G

MINNEAPOLIS - Supervalu, Inc. said yesterday that it has tapped David Pylipow to be the company's s.v.p., human resources, succeeding Ron Tortelli, who has held that position since 1988, and will retire at the end of the year after a 36-year career at Supervalu.

In his new role Pylipow will take charge of the company's enterprise-wide human resources functions, including talent management, employee and labor relations, compensation and benefits, and leadership and organizational development. Pylipow also will manage the office services organization at Supervalu's headquarters location. He will report directly to Supervalu chairman and c.e.o. Jeff Noddle.

Pylipow was promoted from s.v.p. of human resources for Save-A-Lot, Supervalu's chain of more than 1,200 extreme-value stores; in which capacity he has helmed the human resources function for the division since joining the company in 1998. During his time with the company, he bolstered Save-A-Lot's organization to support its rapid growth and expanding employee base. Save-A-Lot currently employs about 9,000 people across 38 states. Before coming to Save-A-Lot, Pylipow held a series of increasingly responsible positions at Hallmark Cards, Inc., for 18 years.

"Dave brings to the position an accomplished track record and an in-depth understanding of both retail and logistics -- the two highly complementary components of Supervalu's business," said Noddle in a statement. "I look forward to working with him in this new capacity on important HR issues facing our company and the industry.

"On behalf of Supervalu, I am extremely grateful to Ron for his stewardship and counsel. He has built a strong foundation and set the stage for the ongoing development of Supervalu's human resources efforts to support the company's future success," continued Noddle.

In other Supervalu news, the company was recently recognized by the Proctor & Gamble military department for excellent service in the recent aftermath of the Florida hurricanes. P&G awarded Supervalu's Southeast Region Military Department with the "Bravo Zulu" award for going above and beyond the call of duty in making sure Florida commissaries were kept up and running in the hurricanes' aftermath. This is only the second time in the history of P&G that the award has been given outside of the company's internal military department.

With annual revenues of over $20 billion, Supervalu holds leading market share positions with its more than 1,500 retail grocery locations, including licensed Save-A-Lot locations. Also, through the company's diverse logistics network, the company offers distribution and related logistics support services across the country's grocery channel.
