Supervalu Pharmacies Step Up National Flu Prevention Program

In a bid to help consumers avoid catching the flu at the outset of the season, Supervalu Pharmacies later this month will offer influenza vaccines in two forms.

Beginning September 28, specially trained and certified Supervalu pharmacists will administer both the needle-free FluMist nasal spray and traditional flu vaccinations, during regular pharmacy hours on a walk-in basis or by appointment at most locations.

In addition, the company will offer host a series of flu shot clinics in most Supervalu stores at various times through November 1.

The flu shot program represents "a more holistic approach to pharmacy," said Chris Dimos, president of the Franklin Park, Ill.-based Supervalu pharmacy subsidiary. "Our in-store pharmacists across the country see that many health-related choices are influenced by convenience and price. As a company we are responding to these real concerns."

Dimos said Supervalu Pharmacies has also reduced the price of its flu shots compared to last year.

Supervalu's pharmacy subsidiary operates under 11 retail brands: Acme Sav-on Pharmacy, Albertsons Sav-on Pharmacy, Albertsons Osco Pharmacy, bigg's Pharmacy, Cub Pharmacy, Farm Fresh Pharmacy, Jewel-Osco Pharmacy, Shaw's Osco Pharmacy, Shop'n Save Pharmacy, Shop 'n Save Osco Pharmacy, and Shoppers Pharmacy.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is recommending that more people than ever get a flu shot this year.
