Supervalu to Get Lucky in Vegas

MINNEAPOLIS -- In addition to the three stores it rebranded under the Lucky banner yesterday in the California cities of Alhambra, San Ysidro, and El Centro, Supervalu also plans to open two new Lucky stores in Las Vegas next month.

This is the first time the Lucky banner will open outside of California, and it is a clear sign that Supervalu will bring some of the unique formats it picked up from Albertsons into new markets. The retailer said it also plans to open more Lucky stores, where the market fits.

Each Lucky store will be more than 36,000-square-foot, a neighborhood unit offering a mix of products tailored to local needs, at everyday low prices.

"We chose to promote the Lucky banner because it is well-recognized among consumers as a brand that delivers the right products and assortment at the right price," Supervalu spokeswoman Haley Meyer told Progressive Grocer.

"We have obtained an order preventing Grocery Outlet from using the Lucky name pending resolution of the legal matter," Meyer added, making reference to a banner battle going on in the courts and above the entrances of stores in the West, as both grocers have tried to resurrect the once well-liked name. "We spent years developing the brand and good will surrounding the famous Lucky trademark, so clearly we will work to protect it. We can't comment further on pending litigation."

Earlier this week Boise, Idaho-based Albertsons LLC, which was purchased by the Cerberus-led consortium and also lays claim to the name, had won a ruling in the legal battle against Berkeley, Calif.-based Grocery Outlet for the Lucky brand. District Judge Jeffrey S. White of San Francisco granted Albertson's request for a preliminary injunction blocking Grocery Outlet from using the name.
