Stop & ShopPeapod Expanding N.E. Territory

QUINCY, Mass. -- Stop & Shop, based here, and Chicago-based Internet grocer Peapod, said yesterday that they were introducing their joint online shopping and delivery service to western Connecticut and southeastern New York, with deliveries starting Aug 29.

The e-commerce operation will be able to serve residents of New Milford, Brookfield, and New Fairfield, and other towns in Connecticut, via http://www.stopandshop.com. In coming weeks, the partners said they will add additional areas in New York, including Brewster, Carmel, Mahopac, and Somers.

The Web site's functionality allows shoppers to create personal lists, read nutrition information online, sort products by price or nutrition criteria, and take advantage of personalized online coupons. Stop & Shop cardholders can shop online from a list of items they've bought at their local Stop & Shop, by entering their card numbers at the site. Groceries can be delivered as soon as the day after an order is placed.

Stop & Shop and Peapod are both owned by Netherlands-based Royal Ahold, which operates more than 1,300 supermarkets in the United States and worldwide, with total consolidated sales of U.S. $49 billion.

Peapod said it today serves 15 U.S. markets, including the metro areas of Chicago, Boston, Long Island, N.Y., and Washington, D.C., in addition to smaller communities in the states of Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, and Rhode Island. Peapod said it has made more than 7 million deliveries since its first delivery in 1990.
