Stop & Shop Converting ‘4th Wave’ of A&P Stores

The Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. has entered the "fourth wave" of conversions of the 25 stores it purchased from the bankrupt Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. (A&P). During the conversion process, each wave of stores will temporarily close for about seven days, while their pharmacies and banks remain open.

The five stores currently undergoing conversion are in Closter, N.J., and Bayside, Baldwin, Massapequa and Seaford, N.Y. All are expected to re-open on Nov. 6.

"We continue to work around the clock to convert the newly acquired A&P stores to Stop & Shop stores," said Don Sussman, president of Stop & Shop New York Metro Division, in Purchase, N.Y. "We've completed the grand opening of nine stores to rave reviews."

The Ahold USA banner's third wave of converted stores opened on Friday, Oct. 30 in Huntington, Bronx, Brooklyn, Whitestone and Howard Beach, N.Y., as well as Kinnelon, N.J.

Stop & Shop employs more than 59,000 associates and operates 403 stores throughout Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York and New Jersey.
