Stew Leonard's Petting Zoo Sheep Dies From Heat
NORWALK, Conn. -- Last week's severe heat caused the death of a sheep at a Stew Leonard's petting zoo in the retailer's parking lot here Wednesday, according to published reports.
"Stew's Little Farm" contains live barnyard animals, including goats, cows, chickens, sheep, and geese, and is offered as a free attraction to children.
According to published reports, the three remaining sheep at were taken to an air-conditioned veterinary hospital. A veterinarian examined two calves, a turkey, and some chickens, but allowed them to stay at the farm.
It was the first animal death at the farm in the store's 37-year history, reports said. The animals are well taken care of by a full-time attendant, and are supplied regularly with water.
The temperature reached a high of 95 degrees Fahrenheit Wednesday at the National Weather Service's observation station in Bridgeport, Conn.
