SpartanNash Inks Deal With Amazon

SpartanNash has agreed to supply online retailer Amazon’s distribution centers with grocery products. The Byron Center, Mich.-based wholesaler primarily provides “dry-and-chill” products for Amazon’s Prime Now same-day deliveries, but is expanding into the Fresh service, which delivers groceries directly to customers’ doors. The product mix is slightly different from what SpartanNash supplies to its independent grocers and 160 stores.

“We are excited about our relationship with Amazon,” said Spartan Nash COO David Staples during a quarterly sales conference call last week. “While still a relatively new account, the volume has been greater than we expected, and we believe that it has significant growth potential. This relationship is a great example of our commitment to pursuing solutions for difficult logistic issues, and we continue to look at opportunities to grow sales with other non-traditional customers.”

During the conference call,  SpartanNash President and CEO Dennis Eidson cited diverse sales opportunities, among them the partnership with Seattle-based Amazon, as one of the reasons that the wholesaler expects meet performance expectations.
