Spartan Upgrades Shrink Control System

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Spartan Stores here has selected Woburn, Mass.-based Retail Expert, Inc. as its new corporate exception reporting and performance management partner.

NaviStor manages key performance indicators (KPIs) for the retail enterprise with a focus on reducing shrinkage and improving operational performance. Key features include exception reporting, scorecarding, data mining, and automated email alerts. NaviStor can quickly identify company policy, procedure infractions and associates needing additional training.

In addition, Spartan Stores selected Retail Expert's newest product offering, the web-based report "Store Manager's Assistant," which provides a weekly report that gives store managers insight into how specific areas of their store are operating, as well as pointing out high risk or poorly performing associates. Spartan will also implement Retail Expert's CCTV interface through which NaviStor alerts an investigator who can then view suspicious transactions.

"NaviStor will offer us the flexibility we need to set up the specific business measurements necessary to reduce our exposure to shrinkage and improve operational performance," said Tim Bartkowiak, director of security for Spartan. "We are also looking forward to rolling out Retail Expert's new Store Manager's Assistant to all of our stores. We see a need to involve our store managers in the process of improving performance and working closely with their employees."

Spartan Stores owns and operates 54 supermarkets and 20 deep-discount drug stores in Michigan and Ohio, including Family Fare Supermarkets, Glen's Markets and The Pharm. The company also supplies more than 40,000 private-label and national brand products to more than 330 independent grocery stores.
