Southeastern Grocers Serves Up Chek Real Sugar Soda
Select flavors of Southeastern Grocers LLC’s private label soda Chek, exclusive to Bi-Lo, Harveys and Winn-Dixie supermarkets, are now made with real sugar, just like the original recipe that rolled out to stores back in 1965. Chek Real Sugar comes in cola, grape, orange and strawberry flavors, and sells for the same price as regular Chek soda. What’s more, the new line sports a retro can design harking back to the product’s look back in the day.
Southeastern Grocers decided to offer the reformulated soda after conducting a survey finding that one-third of Bi-Lo, Harveys and Winn-Dixie customers wanted to reduce their consumption of additives and preferred soft drinks made with 100 percent real sugar.
“We’re excited to celebrate more than half a century of Chek soda and reintroduce our customers to a recipe similar to the original,” noted Dewayne Rabon, group VP of grocery for Jacksonville, Fla.-based Southeastern Grocers. “Our customers have told us they’re looking to feed their families less artificial additives. Chek Real Sugar provides a sweetness that our customers will love, at a price they’ll love even more.”
Customers can sample Chek Real Sugar at Bi-Lo, Harveys and Winn-Dixie locations July 1-3 and post their thoughts to social media using the hashtag #ThrowBackaChek. Additionally, special prices on all varieties of Chek soda will appear in the stores’ weekly ads.
Southeastern Grocers, the second-largest supermarket in the Southeast based on store count, employs nearly 60,000 associates in about 750 grocery stores, 140 liquor stores and 500 in-store pharmacies throughout Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina and South Carolina.
