Smart & Final Taps Derek Jones to Helm Foodservice Division
Smart & Final has named Derek Jones president of its Cash & Carry Smart Foodservice division, which serves as a one-stop shop for large and small needs of foodservice operators.
Coming from the SpartanNash Co., Jones brings 26 years of experience in retail, most recently as president and EVO of wholesale and distribution operations at the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retailer and wholesaler. Prior to that role, he served in a variety of other positions at the company, including EVP of food distribution, EVP of retail operations and EVP of wholesale operations. Before SpartanNash, he held roles in operations, distribution and supply chain capacities at companies such as Unisource Worldwide, Office Depot, Walgreens and Walmart.
“This is an exciting period of growth for Cash & Carry, and we look forward to Derek’s support in delivering great results as we enter a brand new market for the second year in a row,” said the Commerce, Calif.-based company's President and CEO Dave Hirz, to whom Jones will report. “He has the experience and track record to drive our ongoing expansion efforts in key markets, and we’re confident he’s the right person for this large, important part of our business.”
A graduate of the University of Arkansas, Jones is principal and business advisor for Future Development Group LLC, an organization aiming to provide places of learning, support and resources to students. Previously, he served on the boards for the National Grocers Association and Heart of West Michigan United Way.
Headquartered near Portland, Ore., Cash & Carry Smart Foodservice has 60 wholesale stores located in Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, Nevada and Utah.
