ShopRite Recalls Ground Meat
MARLTON, N.J. -- A ShopRite here has voluntarily recalled all store-made ground meat that was produced Monday as a result of the possibility of small metal fragments.
ShopRite officials said they do not believe the ground meat poses an immediate health hazard and described the recall as a "precautionary step." The source of the fragments, which were discovered during a routine cleaning procedure, had yet to be identified by the quality assurance team at Wakefern Food Corp., the merchandising and distribution arm of ShopRite, which launched a full investigation.
Wakefern Corp. v.p. consumer and corporate communications Ellen Gowin told Progressive Grocer that only store-made ground meat from the Marlton store with a sell-by date of June 5 or June 6 was affected by the recall.
All of the shoppers who purchased the meat were traced through their PricePlus cards and called, Gowin said. One positive aspect of the recall, she noted, was that "folks were very pleased with that extra step." The recall was localized to about 250 people, she added.
The shoppers affected by the refund were offered full refunds.
