Shoppers Can File Loblaws Hepatitis Restitution Claims Online

BRAMPTON, Ont. -- More than 19,000 people who had to get hepatitis A vaccines after being exposed to produce tainted by an infected employee at a Loblaws store four years ago can file restitution claims beginning this week, according to reports in the Toronto Star.

Under a settlement reached in April, any customer who was vaccinated or went to a doctor after the exposure is eligible for restitution of CAN $150 (US $134) by filing a claim at http://www.claimsadministrator.ca/loblaws.

The agreement was verbally approved late last week by Justice Maurice Cullity of the Ontario Superior Court, who said he appreciated that Loblaws settled the case instead of drawing out litigation for years.

Two people who were actually infected by hepatitis will receive a higher amount than $150, which will be determined through mediation.

According to Canadian press reports, the settlement could cost the grocer up to CAN $4 million (US $3.6 million).
