Shop ’n Save Readies for Pittsburgh Hill District Store

Residents of Pittsburgh’s Hill District that have long been without a full-service grocery store will welcome with open arms a new Shop ’n Save which is set to open on Centre Ave. on Oct. 17.

The new store, which will open in collaboration with the Hill House Economic Development Corporation (HHEDC) and which will bring more than 100 new jobs to the area, marks the first local grocery store to open in the Hill District in more than three decades.

“We commend the HHEDC for being a tremendous partner bringing everyone together to make this project come to life,” said Bob Holmes, area sales director for Supervalu, which supplies the independently owned and operated Shop ’n Save stores.

Built from the ground up, the new 29,500-square-foot store is owned and operated by Jeff Ross, and will provide an array of fresh produce and prepared food options, along with an expanded dairy and frozen foods section and full-service deli, bakery and meat departments with an on-site butcher.

“Not only are we proud to be opening up another Shop ’n Save store, but my family and I are thrilled to be a part of the Hill District and Downtown Pittsburgh community for many years to come,” said Jeff Ross, owner of the Centre Avenue Shop ’n Save. “The new location will bring new jobs to the region and will while provide shoppers with the quality and value that the area has been missing for more than 30 years,” added Ross, who also operates four additional Shop ’n Save stores in western Pennsylvania, including two in McKeesport, one in Connellsville and one in Mt. Pleasant.

State-of-the-art refrigeration, lighting and display cases will provide Ross’s new Hill District store with increased energy efficiency, and shoppers will eventually have access to a bank within the store. Expanded customer service offerings will include custom cake orders, money orders, postage and lottery, bill pay, ATM, MoneyGram, coin counter, Redbox and Rug Doctor.

The new Hill District store will offer a variety of weekly specials, Pump Perks fuel discounts and everyday savings to Hill District residents, as well as surrounding neighborhoods, including nearby Duquesne University.

There are more than 90 independently owned and operated Shop ‘n Save stores in western Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, Ohio and West Virginia.
