Shaw’s and Star Market to the Fresh Rescue

Shaw’s and Star Market stores have committed to work with local food banks in a food donation program in conjunction with Feeding America. Through the program, known as Fresh Rescue, the banners of Boise, Idaho-based Albertsons Cos. will donate products most needed by food banks, including meat.

Shaw’s and Star Market stores in Massachusetts and Maine will be the first in the division to roll out Fresh Rescue, with locations in Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and Vermont to follow.

“At Shaw’s and Star Market, we remain committed to battling hunger so that no child or family goes without a meal,” said Paul Gossett, president of East Bridgewater, Mass.-based Shaw’s. “The Fresh Rescue program is one more way that we are working to help make a difference.”

Gossett added that the chain was “also working closely with our friends and partners at the Greater Boston Food Bank, Worcester County Food Bank and the Good Shepherd Food Bank on this first phase of the program rollout in Massachusetts and Maine.”

“Albertsons Cos. is a longstanding food donor to the Feeding America network,” noted Matt Knott, president of Chicago-based Feeding America, the largest hunger relief and food rescue organization in the United States. “They continue to support food banks across the nation through a broad range of donation initiatives.”

According to published reports, the program is a revival of an earlier food bank donation initiative that ended last year.

Shaw’s and Star Market operate 154 store locations employing about 19,000 employees.
