Same Store Sales Keeps Growing for Cost-U-Less

BELLEVUE, Wash. -- Warehouse grocer Cost-U-Less, Inc., said yesterday it continues to see a monthly increase in same store sales across the 11-unit chain, with a 4 percent comp rise for the four weeks ended July 24, among stores open a full 13 months.

The latest monthly results paled beside a 14.7 percent rise for the corresponding period a year ago, but that was a spike that resulted from new programs initiated that year by the retailer, which operates primarily in island markets within the Caribbean and Pacific region.

"We rolled out some new initiatives in our stores for 2004 caused the huge spike," J. Jeffrey Meder, Cost-U-Less president and c.e.o. told Progressive Grocer. "We rolled out a few new initiatives that year. We enhanced our produce department and moved away from bulk sales, making it more like a U.S. mainstream supermarket. The quality of our items is now far superior to what you normally see on the island markets we serve. We also started a rotisserie chicken program, which has become extremely popular."

Total sales for the four weeks ended July 24 increased 2.5 percent to $16.1 million, compared to $15.7 million for the corresponding period a year ago. Total sales for the 30 weeks ended July 24 increased 4.3 percent to $121.7 million compared to $116.6 million last year.
