Safeway's E.V.P. Retail Operations Named Food Industry Exec of the Year
PLEASANTON, Calif. -- The University of Southern California's Marshall School of Business Food Industry Management Program (FIM) has named Safeway's e.v.p. of retail operations, Bruce Everette, the Food Industry Executive of Year. Prof. Tom Arnold, director of the program, will present the award April 26 at the FIM Program's graduation ceremony at USC's Town and Gown facility in Los Angeles. The ceremony will feature 33 graduates of the program.
Everette started at Safeway in 1968 as part-time carryout clerk, where he worked while earning his bachelor's degree. Over the next 10 years he managed five stores before moving into the Richmond Division office. After working for Safeway in Oklahoma, Maryland, and Arizona, Everette was named president of Safeway's Northern California Division in 1998. Three years later he became an e.v.p.; then, after a year in Chicago as interim president of Safeway's Dominick's subsidiary, he returned to corporate headquarters.
Everette was inducted into the San Francisco Sales Manager Hall of Fame in 2005 for his contributions to the food industry and is a director of the Western Association of Food Chains.
The FIM Program, which has been at USC for 48 years, each spring trains high-potential managers from the food retailing industry.
Safeway currently operates 1,775 stores in the United States and Canada.
