Safeway UK Pilots NCR FastLane Self-Checkout

LONDON -- NCR Corp. today announced that Safeway PLC has begun a pilot deployment with NCR FastLane self-checkout, allowing customers to scan, bag, and pay for goods without cashier assistance at its Horndean store near Portsmouth.

"NCR's FastLane self-checkout is already a tremendous customer success," noted Ric Francis, Safeway's c.i.o. "The extent of customer adoption in such a short period of time means Safeway is considering extending the trial to more locations."

The three-month Safeway pilot began in May. The Horndean store is deploying four NCR FastLane self-checkouts located in the center of the traditional checkout lanes.

"The success of self-checkout among Safeway customers reflects the popularity of NCR FastLane in the rest of Europe and the United States," said Alberto Camuri, vice president of NCR's Retail Solutions Division for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. "Consumer popularity of NCR FastLane is leading to retailers extending their trial deployments to many more stores."
