Safeway Resumes Operation of California Distribution Center

WASHINGTON -- Safeway on Monday said it would resume control of its Tracy, Calif. distribution center, removing Summit Logistics as a third-party operator.

Teamsters general president Jim Hoffa praised Safeway's change to direct operations. "While many grocery companies have been moving to third-party operations, it is clear that Safeway recognizes that they can be more efficient operating their own facility, providing better service to their stores and maintaining good relationships with their employees," he said.

After a unanimous recommendation by shop stewards, workers voted 800-22 on June 28 to approve a new contract at the Tracy center.

Summit Logistics is a subsidiary of Tibbit and Britton, a major third-party company in the U.S. and Canada. In 2001, Local 439 struck the company for seven weeks.
