Safeway Names EVP/CFO

PLEASANTON, Calif. - Safeway Inc. announced the appointment of Robert L. Edwards as its new e.v.p. and c.f.o. Edwards will oversee the company's finance, investor relations, information technology, real estate and legal functions, and will report directly to Steven A. Burd, Safeway's chairman, president and c.e.o.

Edwards most recently served as e.v.p. and c.f.o. of Maxtor Corporation, a supplier of hard disk drives based in Milpitas, Calif. While at Maxtor, he oversaw all aspects of finance and information technology.

Prior to joining Maxtor, Edwards was s.v.p,, c.f.o. and chief administrative officer for five years at Imation Corporation, a developer, manufacturer and supplier of magnetic and optical data storage media.

Before joining Imation, Edwards had a successful 20-year career at Santa Fe Pacific Corporation and its affiliates.

In other Safeway news, the company has tapped WPP Group's Berlin Cameron/Red Cell, New York, to assist on advertising projects for the corporation as well as for its various stores, which include Von's, Pavilion's and Dominick's, according to an Advertising Age report. Berlin Cameron will work with Interpublic Group of Cos.' Dailey & Associates, Los Angeles.
