Russia Ends Ban on Florida Meat

Russia called off its anthrax-inspired ban on imports of livestock and meat products from Florida today after receiving assurances from the United States.

The prohibition was imposed Oct. 12 after several people in Florida became infected with the disease and one died. It was lifted after the U.S. Department of Agriculture provided documentation that no U.S. cattle or poultry have been registered as having anthrax.

The U.S. is expected to sell about $500 million worth of poultry to Russia this year, with about two-fifths of it moving through Florida.
