Rocket Hits Tesco Lotus Store in Bangkok

BANGKOK - A Tesco Lotus supermarket in Bangkok was hit today by an anti-tank rocket that exploded in a nearby building housing the office of El Al Israel Airlines, Reuters reports. Police said the incident did not appear to be related to the conflict in the Middle East. No one was killed or injured in the blast, police reported.

Bangkok Police Chief Anan Piromkaeu told reporters that an unidentified assailant fired an M72 anti-tank rocket, which hit and damaged the Tesco Lotus supermarket before exploding in a nearby building housing El Al's offices at 6.30 a.m.

Anan said police were investigating the possibility the rocket was actually aimed at the Tesco store, according to Reuters.

"We don't know yet, but we think the Tesco Lotus department store was the target," one police officer told Reuters. "We have had trouble with bombings at some of the Tesco stores before."

Reuters reports that local radio stations said the attack may have been the result of a dispute between security companies contracted by the store.
