Richboro Shop N' Bag Installs New POS, Self-Checkout System

RICHBORO, Pa. -- Local independent Richboro Shop 'n Bag this week completed the installation of a new point-of-sale system -- part of an upgrade that began with the single-store operator's preparation for Sunrise 2005.

"Our previous system was DOS-based and didn't have the functionality that we needed to accommodate the requirements for Sunrise 2005," Murray Battleman, Shop 'n Bag's owner and president told Progressive Grocer. "And since the systems are now going on 10 years old, we decided to upgrade the entire POS and add self-checkout units."

Battleman installed Retalix ScanMaster software on NCR Hardware at the store's checkouts, as well as two Fujitsu U-Scan units. Shop 'n Bag, and is the first store in the country to integrate Fujitsu's U-Scan self-checkout system to the ScanMaster POS, according to Battleman.

"Service-oriented independents often resist investing in self-checkout units because of limited space," said Battleman. "But I need them for competitive reasons -- many of the large chains out here have them, and the lines of customers are four deep. It's getting to a point where they expect the service."

To enhance the service at the self-checkout units -- as well as free associates from being tethered to them, Battleman plans to deploy handheld wireless units to monitor the self-checkout operations and alert them to any issue that arise. "As soon as Retalix builds the interface to the units, we'll install them," said Battleman. "They will enhance the front end service, and service is what we're about."
