Retailers Gear Up for Black History Month Events

NEW YORK -- Bi-Lo/Bruno's, Pathmark, and Target are among the retailers preparing to celebrate Black History Month in February, via a variety of educational events and promotions.

Greenville, S.C.-based Bi-Lo Supermarkets said yesterday that its 340 Bi-Lo and Bruno's stores will hold an essay contest open to high school seniors. The theme of the essay, "What is Your Dream for the World in 2020?," is meant to convey the goals and aspirations of high school students throughout the Southeast.

Seniors are being asked to write an essay (minimum 1,000 words) and submit it between Jan. 27 and Feb. 21. Four winners, one from each of Bi-Lo/Bruno's four regions, will receive a $1,000 scholarship. Essays will be judged by the Bi-Lo/Bruno's Multi-Cultural Networking Group.

"We want to be able to reward the achievements and help brighten the future of these students," said Bi-Lo/Bruno's senior director of diversity, Magaly Penn, in a statement. "Our goal is to continually support and inspire their dreams."

Minneapolis-based Target is celebrating Black History Month this February, and all year long, with an educational Web site at http://www.Target.com/blackhistory. The site features a learning center, historical timeline, and teacher's corner, which includes curriculum guides focusing on the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

Target also has released a gospel compilation CD featuring music greats, such as Kirk Franklin, Tonex, Yolanda Adams, and CeCe Winans. Two dollars from the purchase of the $5.99 CD will be donated to the United Negro College Fund. The CD is available at Target stores nationwide and at Target.com.

In a special partnership with Mary J. Blige, Target has also released an exclusive CD, "Love Songs," available at stores nationwide and at Target.com.

Carteret, N.J.-based Pathmark Stores, meanwhile, is preparing for its annual Black History Month celebration, which kicks off on Feb. 4 with a free Pathmark Gospel Choir competition in New York City's Grand Central Terminal. Some of the best gospel voices in the country will compete for $10,000 in prizes.

In 2006, for the first time, a sister event to the Pathmark Gospel Choir Competition is taking place in Philadelphia's 30th Street Station. The free event will take place Feb. 17.
