Report: Dominick's May Close Two Dozen Stores

CHICAGO - Safeway-owned Dominick's might close as many as 25 of its 113 stores early next month, according to The Chicago Tribune.

Citing unnamed sources, the Tribune reported that the troubled chain planned to close from 10 to 25 money-losing or marginal stores early next month. The stores to be closed reportedly included some of the chain's newer outlets in the Chicago suburbs, which have performed below expectations.

Dominick's parent company, Safeway Inc., reported earlier this month that it planned to close an unspecified number of the chain's stores.

Dominick's chief executive Randall Onstead Jr., who addressed the City Club of Chicago on Monday, confirmed that store closings were planned but declined to say how many until employees are notified in early January.

"It's not going to be 40 or 50 stores," Onstead said. "That's not going to happen."
