Raley's Sets Plans for Smaller-format Store

8/27/2015

Raley's Family of Fine Stores has unveiled plans to build its first smaller-format store in the Sacramento neighborhood of Arden.

The 36,000-square-foot location – just over half the size of the grocer's traditional 60,000-square-foot supermarkets – will break ground in early to mid-2016, with plans to open in the second quarter of 2017. The store will be located at the corner of Howe Avenue and Fair Oaks Boulevard.

"What's driving change in the organization are our customers. We're listening to the customer, understanding what they want and that's driving how we're evolving," Chelsea Minor, director of public relations and public affairs, told Progressive Grocer.

"In part, we selected a smaller format so we can be in control of how we operate, which will enable us to specialize the customer experience," Minor said.

According to Minor, the specific features that will differentiate the store from traditional Raley's locations will be unveiled at the time of the store's ground-breaking, though a statement on the grocer's website describes the concept as "state-of-the art with a focus on the most sustainable features."

Michael Teel, owner and CEO, said in a statement, "Raley’s takes great pride operating our business in one of the richest agricultural hubs in the world. We are excited about what this region represents for the future of food production.

“Raley’s is helping lead the way to a better food system and our new site offers an opportunity to continue that innovation,” he said.

Raley's Family of Fine Stores operates stores in northern California and Nevada under four banners: Raley’s Supermarkets, Bel Air Markets, Nob Hill Foods and Food Source.
