Publix Testing TV Karts for Kids
LAKELAND, Fla. -- Publix Super Markets here is testing a new device aimed at keeping kids more manageable during the shopping experience, according to published reports. The TV Kart is a car-shaped shopping cart with a TV screen that plays popular children's shows.
The cart, made by a New Zealand-based company called the Cabco Group, is being tested at five Publix stores in metro Atlanta.
Parents pay $1 to use the carts, which have brakes and stay parked on charging mats. They can choose from three kinds of carts: Barney, The Wiggles, or Bob the Builder.
Publix plans to test the TV Karts for two months before deciding whether to roll them out to other stores and other markets, a spokeswoman told the Lakeland Ledger.
Retailers that sign up for the TV Karts get an undisclosed commission on rentals, according to the report. Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Meijer has also reportedly shown interest in testing the carts.
