Publix to Open Four Stores in Montgomery, Ala.

LAKELAND, Fla. - Publix Super Markets, Inc. here continues its expansion in Alabama with the addition of four stores in Montgomery, according to the Lakeland, Fla. Ledger.

"We are ready to begin construction and plan to open all four stores by the end of 2005," said Atlanta Division spokeswoman Brenda Reid.

With the opening of these locations, Publix's Alabama stores will total 24. According to Publix's annual report, the chain had 12 stores in Alabama at the end of 2003.

According to Bob Moore, Atlanta Division v.p., "We're excited to enter the Montgomery community and look forward to serving all of our new customers. Publix's expansion will bring hundreds of new jobs to Montgomery."

Publix announced in 2001 it planned to open 340 new stores in the next five years. It had 648 supermarkets at that time. The chain now has 812 stores. In its annual report, the company said it plans to open 57 new stores this year. Earlier this year Publix expressed an interest in purchasing Bruno's and Bi-Lo supermarket. Royal Ahold announced in February that it intends to find a buyer for Bruno's and sister chain Bi-Lo to strengthen its financial position by reducing debt.
