Price Chopper Launches Chainwide Energy Awareness Day at Wind-powered Store

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- To mark the observance of Energy Awareness Day at all of its stores, Price Chopper here held a press conference yesterday at its Saratoga Springs, N.Y. location at Route 50 to inform shoppers of the regional Northeast retailer's energy conservation initiatives and provide energy savings tips to consumers through brochures and visual demonstrations.

The chain's two Saratoga Springs stores are the first wind-powered supermarkets in the state, according to Price Chopper.

Price Chopper has launched several significant energy conservation initiatives in its stores, warehouses, and main office. For instance, a dedicated 'energy team' was formed in 2001 as part of the corporation's "Continuous Improvement" initiative and has since helped to lower the chain's comparable store energy usage by 4.5 percent. Conservation efforts have reduced usage by almost 5 million kWh of electricity and 500,000 therms of natural gas. Other energy conservation measures include reduced lighting overnight, recommissioning, lighting and fan retrofits, excess spotlight removal, the proliferation of store energy specialists, peak load shedding, motion sensor installations, reduced neon sign usage, and a chainwide energy awareness campaign.

"The impetuses behind Price Chopper's conservation efforts are to reduce a cost of doing business in order to help keep the price of goods low and to be a conscientious corporate citizen by helping to reduce the overall demand for energy," said Price Chopper v.p. of public relations and consumer services Mona Golub.

"This is exactly what we hoped would happen when the city took the lead with wind power last year. We applaud the Golub Corp.'s environmental commitment, which goes right along with their good citizenship in Saratoga Springs," noted the city's commissioner of public works, Thomas McTygue. Last year Saratoga Springs became the first city in New York to purchase wind power.

The family-owned Golub Corp. owns and operates 111 Price Chopper grocery stores in New York, Vermont, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Hampshire. Golub's approximately 24,000 associates collectively own 54 percent of the company's privately held stock.
