Piggly Wiggly Carolina Lays Off 26
Piggly Wiggly Carolina Company reduced its Charleston, S.C. corporate headquarters staff by 26 workers as of Oct. 10. "These are never easy decisions. This workforce reduction and restructuring will allow Piggly Wiggly to remain competitive," Rita Postell, manager of community and employees relations for Piggly Wiggly Carolina told Progressive Grocer on Tuesday.
"These challenging economic conditions are touching industries everywhere. Our company is the largest employee-owned company in South Carolina and committed to its employees and customers."
Two months ago, Piggly Wiggly Carolina sold its truck fleet to Miami-based Ryder Systems, Inc. The purchase agreement allowed the grocery chain to lease the vehicles back, helping it minimize risk and cut costs. Shortly after the transaction, Piggly Wiggly laid off its 17-worker mechanics department.
Piggly Wiggly Carolina employs about 5,000 workers and operates 115 supermarkets in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia.
