Penn Traffic Cuts Jobs at Some Big Bear Stores
COLOMBUS, Ohio - Penn Traffic Co. has eliminated 59 jobs at some of its Big Bear supermarkets in West Virginia and southeast Ohio, according to a report in Business First of Columbus.
A spokesman said the cuts were made so the stores can operate in an economically sound fashion. He cited increased operating costs and flat grocery prices as reasons for the cuts.
In its most recent quarterly filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Penn Traffic reported its fiscal third-quarter revenue fell by about $19 million to $580 million. Its loss for the quarter ended last Nov. 2 eased to $5.7 million from a $26 million loss a year earlier.
Penn Traffic's Big Bear chain employs about 6,200. Penn Traffic, which also operates Bi-Lo, P&C and Quality supermarkets, employs 16,000 in all.
Penn Traffic eliminated 40 Central Ohio jobs in March when it closed a Big Bear Plus store in Newark, according to the report.
